Why Does Moshe Rabbeinu Die?

Let's do something from Vayelech, when Moshe begs for his life.

On the seventh day of Adah, Moshe heard a heavenly voice, this is your last day on earth.

Oh, why must I die now, Moshe asked.

What is my sin? I've decreed that every descendant of Adam must die, Hashem answered.

But I'm different.

I spent 40 years and nights in heaven.

Three times no one served you as loyally as I did.

Moshe implored Hashem.

In spite of that, you still must die, said Hashem.

Moshe continued, But Adam died because he ate from a fruit forbidden for him.

Did I disobey you like that? You yourself wrote about me in the Torah how faithful I am to you.

Do you think you are a greater tzaddik than Adam? Hashem asked Moshe.

I believe so, replied Moshe.

Adam and Chava let the snake talk them into doing a nevera.

I use the snake to heal sick people.

And do you think you are greater than Noah, Hashem asked? Yes, replied Moshe.

When you told Noah that you would bring a flood to the world, he did not beg you to spare the world.

But I, David, for Bnei Yisrael, after the sin with the golden calf, I beg you to take my life rather than destroy them.

Are you greater than Abraham, Hashem asked Moshe? Well, he passed ten difficult tests that I gave him.

But he had a son, Yishmael, whose descendants will do bad things to Bnei Yisrael, Moshe argued.

And you are greater than Yitzchak, Hashem continued.

Yitzchak may have indeed been righteous, but his son Esau is the father of the Romans who will destroy the Beit HaMikdash and kill Bnei Yisrael, replied Moshe.

Well, what about Yaakov? He had 12 righteous sons.

Still, he had to die when the time came, said Hashem.

Yaakov was never in heaven, Moshe persisted.

He did not talk to you face to face as I did.

Neither did he receive the Torah from you.

Stop, Hashem said.

You will die anyway.

Hashem, Moshe cried, but Israel think that I died because of some sin I committed.

Have no fear, Moshe, Hashem told him.

I will write you in the Torah and there will never... and there never was or will be a Navi as great as you.

Please, Hashem, beg Moshe, just let me stay in Eretz Canaan two or three days.

Then you can take my life.

It cannot be, Hashem answered.

Not even your body will be carried there.

But if I will not leave Bnei Yisrael, at least let my sons be in charge or my nephews, Aaron's sons.

No, Hashem, answered Moshe.

Yeshua will take your place.
