145. Mother Pigeon

[upbeat music] Today we're doing an episode all about pigeon advocacy, and we have the person to have, uh, this talk with, Tina Pena, who's also known as Mother Pigeon.

So Mother Pigeon, thanks so much for coming on the show.

Um, so can we start by, uh, you introducing yourself and, and how Mother Pigeon came about?

Sure.

I, let's see.

I started, um, making pigeon art probably about, ooh, going on 20 years now, and, um, I then, uh, that was just more like, um, songs and we used to do a felt board, and I did a, like a storybook and about pigeons.

And then, uh, and then I started making the pigeon sculptures, um, you know, soft sculptures and, um, and that was about 13 years ago.

And, um, and then that's when I started to, uh, call myself Mother Pigeon, um, because, uh, you know, we have Mother Goose, right? And, uh, and I thought-

Yeah

... that would be really cute to be Mother Pigeon instead of Mother Goose.

Uh, well, my friend was like, "Oh, you know..." I, I had asked a bunch of people like, you know, "What should my artwork, the thing that I do, be called?" And then, uh, a friend of mine was like, "Mother, Mother Goose." You know, and I was like, then I, then I was like, "Oh my God, I got it.

Mother Pigeon."

Yeah.

So, um, yeah, that's how, uh, I got my name and, um, and it's just been a really amazing, fun thing that I do.

Awesome.

And, and even before that, I'm guessing that there was some sort of interaction that you had with pigeons to get you to start doing the pigeon art to begin with.

What was that like?
