What actually happens to your soul in the first hour after death? Not the funeral or the grieving, the soul itself. In this video I walk through what the Church actually teaches: the particular…
And what comes immediately after that separation is what the church calls the particular judgment.
This isn't the final judgment, the one described in scripture where everything is happening at the end of time when everyone stands before Christ together.
This is something that happens to each soul individually, right at the moment of death.
So what does that actually look like? The church doesn't claim to know every single detail, but the consistent picture from theology and from the testimony of mystics is that the soul encounters Christ directly, and in that encounter, sees itself completely clearly for the first time.
Every choice, every act of love, every act of selfishness, everything hidden and everything forgotten, all of it becomes visible at once.
Now, this doesn't happen because God is presenting a courtroom case against you, but because standing directly in the presence of perfect truth makes self-deception impossible.
You've spent your whole life able to rationalize things to yourself, to soften what you did, to forget what you'd rather not remember.
This is actually a merciful thing, although scary, you know, it does sound terrifying to describe.
But in that same moment, the soul also sees with total clarity exactly what it truly desired underneath all of the mess of its life.
This is the theological basis for heaven and hell as they've commonly been understood.
