Today is All Souls Day, sometimes called the Day of the Dead.

On this day, and during the month of November, the Church prays in a special way for the souls of the faithful departed, and individuals pray especially for those whom they have known and loved.

The holy souls in purgatory died in the mercy of God, thus they are called holy.

However, because they still had attachment to sin at the time of their death, they must undergo the spiritual purification of their souls before they are able to fully love God with their whole heart, mind, and soul for all eternity.

He studied at Oxford and became an Oxford Fellow in 1568 at the age of 19.

Later, he, along with seven others, was deprived of his fellowship for being a Roman Catholic by the Anglican Bishop of Winchester.

Bodie, a married layman and schoolmaster, was arrested in 1580 for continuing to practice the Catholic religion and rejecting England's newly established Heretical Church of England.

He was kept in iron shackles for three years, which he called his school of patience.

In former days, miracles happened in answer to prayer.

They still do in the Catholic Church, but Protestants have lost this power.

However, it is possible to dispense with miracles since Providence has decreed that the operation of natural laws shall produce the best possible results.

Thus, belief in God still serves to humanize the world of nature and to make men feel that physical forces are really their allies.

At puberty, the elements of an unsuperstitious sexual morality ought to be taught.

Boys and girls should be taught that nothing can justify sexual intercourse unless there is mutual inclination.

This is contrary to the teaching of the Church, which holds that, provided the parties are married and the man desires another child, sexual intercourse is justified, however great may be the reluctance of the wife.

Boys and girls should be taught respect for each other's liberty.

and from there he shall come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.

Amen.

And friends, on this solemn day of all saints, and tomorrow the faithful departed, all souls, we pray for the gift of peace all over the world, inside us, for our daily conversion, it has to be daily, into Jesus Christ, and for the gift of discernment, equally important.

We celebrate today the Solemnity of All Saints.

We celebrate the communion of saints, known and unknown, in the glory of heaven.

November begins today with the Solemnity of All Saints and will be followed by the commemoration of all the faithful departed commonly known as All Souls Day, tomorrow Monday.

Today, we're going to consider the mysteries of the Bible.

In our first episode, we discussed the divisions in the church at Corinth.

They were lifting up men like Paul and Peter and Apollos, and this caused schisms in the church.

But Paul said of these men and himself in 1 Corinthians 4 verse 1, Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.

Moreover, it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful.

In reality, I believe God was drawing me to Him, and I'd like to share with you a little bit about my story.

I grew up in a non-religious family.

My parents were good people, hardworking people, but they did not attend any church.

These groups tend to provoke division and confusion by raising issues such as receiving communion kneeling and in the hand or the use of the veil by women.

Meaning if you bring up issues about how you should receive the Eucharist the way Catholics did going back to the beginning, which was kneeling and on the tongue, despite what people might try to say, misquoting or misusing Tertullian, when we have writings from popes from the earliest days of the Church telling people to receive kneeling and on the tongue.

Or if you raise questions about the need for women to veil the way they have always done in the Church history, going all the way back to antiquity.

You, sir or madam, are an extreme type now.

Naughty, naughty.

Okay.

In fact, receiving communion in the hand began as an abuse and an act of disobedience.

As late scholar Michael Davies has explained, communion in the hand was reintroduced in the Catholic Church as an act of rebellion soon after Vatican II.

Pope Leo XIV on Sunday, the Solemnity of All Saints, recalled that holiness is not a privilege reserved for a few, but a universal vocation that speaks to each of us.

Addressing the pilgrims and visitors present in St. Peter's Square, the Pope explained that the Solemnity invites us to share in the joy of that countless multitude of men and women who, following the Lord Jesus, have made their lives a gift to God and to their neighbors.

The Pope said today we celebrate not only the saints recognized by the Church, but also the countless others who have not been formally recognized but are known to God.

Holiness means, with God's grace, bringing forth actions and choices of love that transcend the calculations of greed and the arrogance of evil, which at times seems to prevail.

And he congratulated St. Josemaria.

And he said, congratulations, Monsignor, now that what you've been advocating is now part of the magisterium of the Church, something to that effect.

And St. Josemaria said, well, Only if the laity, the person in the middle of the world, is a contemplative.

Contemplative is someone who is in perennial, constant dialogue with Christ.

But she miraculously survived that and was finally decapitated.

And there was a rush of execution of lay Christians in that square.

And what I want to say is that here we have this all-star of the history of the Church, one of the role models that have been illustrated by St. Josemaria, one of our role models.

And though we are not called, for the most part, to spill our blood and actually die in violence for our faith, at least in our own country here, But we are called to be martyrs.

I grew up in and have since rejected the evangelical tradition in America.

I made my way to the Presbyterian Church USA via the Episcopal tradition.

I am thoroughly churched.

I cannot help but bring this context to the utterance that is the Bible.

that all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, that all those who humble themselves will be exalted.

And so it is that those who suffer are elevated in Jesus' teaching.

This Sunday is All Saints Day, a day that serves as a feast day for all the official saints of the Church, but also as a day of remembrance for those who have passed away during the year.

In the Catholic tradition, sainthood is a process of recognizing that one who has died is first blessed, and second, has lived a life of heroic virtue.

So I'll just finish off with a quote from Pope Paul VI in his Gaudium et Spes.

It is very important, especially where a pluralistic society prevails, that there be a correct notion of the relationship between the political community and the church.

and a clear distinction between the tasks which Christians undertake individually or as a group on their own responsibility as citizens guided by the dictates of a Christian conscience and the activities which, in union with their pastors, they carry out in the name of the Church.

The church, by reason of her role and competence, is not identified in any way with the political community nor bound to any political system.

She is at once a sign and a safeguard of the transcendent character of the human person.
