Data and health informatics are becoming more integrated in healthcare decision making.

How can healthcare systems use data responsibly to identify disparities and improve outcomes without reducing patient to statistics overlooking lived experience? Yeah.

So, I mean, we do have a tremendous amount of data that's collected in the course of healthcare encounters and in the administration of our healthcare system.

And so we can track all of these payments and services, and that gives us an amazing amount of data.

And this kind of administrative health data has been used by researchers like me for many, many years.

And so I can get a data poll, but usually that's only for encounters that happened a year or 18 months ago.

So that isn't tremendously helpful when we need to make real time decisions about things that are dynamic and constantly changing.

And so we're often kind of behind the eight ball in terms of what data we have access to.

In our current world and environment of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the ability to process and simplify and understand immense amounts of data is ever increasing.

But we need to find ways that effectively harness that data to inform healthcare decisions in a real-time way.

The unfortunate reality is that in our current healthcare system, data and evidence do much less of the driving of decisions than other things like politics and ideology, which often tend to be more heavily weighted by those who make decisions.

So really what we need is that kind of a paradigm shift to say that this is important.

And as Albertans or as citizens, we demand that our healthcare system is being driven by data rather than people's preferences.
