I was born in San Francisco, California, and I am a retired field officer for animal control with the City of Palo Alto Police Department, where I served for 40 years.

I've looked at my life as this rather failed search for community.

I think I look at it now as this ongoing search for community.

And the animal communities I could work with in the field made me feel like I wasn't working in such an isolated state.
