to me from his own words that it's a process that was remarkable in how ordinary it was.

that he found it very difficult even to see from afar people with Hansen's disease, or leprosy as it was called.

And he was terrified.

This was a communicable illness.

There was no known cure for it.

It had become a real health problem in Western Europe as one of the results of people returning from the Crusades in the Middle East.
