Like how does Calgary transit track their buses and how does that data go from them to us as riders?

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
So, so there's a few different ways that a transit system might sort of broadcast information about what's going on in their system.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
So there there's a, there's a few different methods and the most basic one you can think of as a schedule, there's a sort of static schedule that's obviously important to give to users.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
But any time you open Google and you look for transit, they're drawing from schedules.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
So that was sort of the vision that came together in sort of the mid 2010s, let's say.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
That work advanced, there was a whole bunch of work done about downtown Calgary in 2016, where they looked at all these different ways to get downtown.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
Um, they also looked at this in 2006, but they looked at other things in 2016 and ultimately they concluded that they wanted to go sort of through the center, what I've been calling the center of mass of the city, sort of the balancing point of the downtown, which is second street and to tunnel it underground, um, go onto the bow river, connect up to the north.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
Um, and that was advanced for a while, um, until it was paused by the provincial government in first in 2019.

He says, Willem, I think you're probably the best person person suited to to answer this question knowing of course that you don't work on the green line project um but someone who's a little bit more familiar with how transit works uh could you field this question
Transit riders are still concerned about safety on the system

Is anybody making gains? Are we seeing anything proving effective in dealing with this?

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
Nobody's found a solution to this problem, and that is because it is a very wide and complex problem.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
It is not necessarily – and you've got to remember, transit agency mandate is to connect people to their destinations, right, move people around the city.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
And so asking transit to do something that is a much larger problem is a bit of a mission creep situation.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
And so everybody around North America is facing this situation and dealing with the same problems.

Willem KlumpenhouwerGUEST
People have tried different programs and some of them are successful, but those things take money, they take resourcing, they take time to see the effects, right? It's not something you see right away.
