So I think it was particularly pertinent how you reflected on, you know, the funding landscape that we see now hasn't perhaps gone in the right direction, um, with, I think, was it around 5% maybe of, you know, all the funds going towards pediatric research when children and young people make up at least 20% of our population, and what that means for, uh, those of us coming up the, uh, career pipeline.
3:13
Well, I, I look back and think of heroic failure as the best description of where we are right now, and I have to take part of the blame.
3:21
It's been great actually having people like Nick Brown here today and also Colin Powell, because we've probably shared that journey together where we've been interested in research.
3:31
We really care about the research.
3:32
We want more research done in children.
3:35
And we've, you know, cheered ourselves along and we've tried to do our bit of work and, and worked very often on our own, uh, and failed spectacularly to improve things.
3:46
I, I think it's, it's really easy as a researcher, and certainly as a young researcher, just to stick in your lane, make your contacts, do your work and think about, "Yeah, okay, I'm doing my bit." But when you stand back and look at the big picture, it really is one of terrible, terrible failure for us.

And, you know, w- to deliver research that matches the needs of our population, we need people to have time to do that, right? So the big question of how do you get time in your job plan to contribute to your research?
4:03
Mm-hmm.
4:03
And, and I think it was fairly obvious to us in children's respiratory medicine that our young people who got asthma or long-term lung conditions like cystic fibrosis, if they started vaping, they were doing a lot worse.
4:17
And we could see that quite early on.
4:19
Um, and we didn't really need to do a study to know that vaping was bad for children's lungs.
4:25
Um, what, what actually was a surprise was that there were lots of other associated risks with vaping, and they included difficulties with sleep, and I think that's really important, and particularly seems to affect young women more than young men.
4:44
Uh, problems with mental health, anxiety, suicidal ideas, um, problems with the mouth, oral hygiene, uh, problems with the eyes and allergies, uh, related to probably the vaping process itself.
4:58
Um, so there are other things that go on, and, and I think what you've already highlighted, if you're vaping during pregnancy, that baby inside you is getting nicotine, and that might not be what you really want for your baby.
7:33
What do we know about vaping that's different to smoking?

Specifically with pediatricians, what support is available when you want to do research? Is there any
8:41
advice? I guess it depends what stage of your career you're at as a pediatrician.
8:48
But there is, for our residents, the trainee research networks, which are just fantastic.
8:54
And some of them would have been around for a very long time and are very established, and some of them are newer.
9:01
And certainly one of the highlights of my time as officer for research with May was getting those training research networks up and running so that there is a TRN near you.
9:12
For those residents listening, there's a TRN near you.
