He was captured, escaped prison twice, and each time went back underground to keep working.

He was captured for the last time in December 1981, tied to an armored truck robbery in West Nyack, New York, that had left two police officers and a security guard dead.

Convicted, he was sentenced to life, and he died in prison of an AIDS-related illness on December 13, 1986, at 40 years old.

Lieutenant Jerry Riley passed away Thursday at the age of 75, 21 years with the FDNY, leaving behind his wife and two children and five grandchildren.

The wake later today in West Nyack, a funeral mass and suffering tomorrow.

Now, in addition to the ceremony at the 9-11 Memorial Friday, of course, other tributes, including at Bryant Park, where they're going to set up 2,753 empty park chairs Friday, each representing a life lost at the World Trade Center.

Their vice president of special events is Dan Fishman.
