Can you give us a bit of a flavour of what is likely to hit the market
1:11
first and what it'll do best? Yeah, so the first thing should be a product called Ruminant Biotech.
1:16
It's a bolus for beef animals only.
1:18
It should be available any time now.
1:20
But we've invested in pasture products, vaccines, probiotics.
1:25
So farmers want choice.
1:27
Farmers want to say, OK, what works in my farming system? And ultimately it's up to them.
4:09
What do we need to do to turn the corner to make that sector even more productive, do you
13:49
And so is it like trial programmes, discussion forums, that sort of thing? No,
13:53
it's commercial scaling of uptake.
13:55
So it's about actually getting the tools on farm.
13:57
So if a processor or like Fonterra or Silverfin comes to us or a farming group comes to us and said, hey, we'd like to try this new technology.
14:04
It's already available.
14:06
We want to support it, but we would like some extra support towards it.
14:09
Then there's an independent panel that looks at that application and decides whether or not the government money will be matched.
15:32
And it looks like one or two of them might be on the shelf relatively soon.
1:29
And so is it like trial programmes, discussion forums, that sort of thing? No,
1:34
it's commercial scaling of uptake.
1:36
So it's about actually getting the tools on farm.
1:38
So if a processor or like Fonterra or Silverfin comes to us or a farming group comes to us and said, hey, we'd like to try this new technology.
1:45
It's already available.
1:47
We want to support it, but we would like some extra support towards it.
1:50
Then there's an independent panel that looks at that application and decides whether or not the government money will be matched.
3:13
And it looks like one or two of them might be on
16:01
How are you going to convince sceptical farmers, the likes of Jane Smith, who's been a real critic of you, and AgriZero NZ to use this technology, even if it is available and even if it works?
16:12
Well, look, ultimately it's up to farmers to decide what they do on their farm.
16:15
And what we're looking to do is make the tools available so farmers will have choices.
16:20
And with these two examples, there's massive other benefits.
16:23
So the reduction in application of nitrogen, the reduction in nitrate leaching, and in the case in Amur, in an embryo, accelerating genetic gain.
16:32
So look, at the end of the day, farmers choose not to use it.
16:34
That'll be up to them.
17:02
Who is going to pay for it, Wayne McNee?
27:58
Now, with the falling livestock numbers, Wayne McNee, announced this week from Stats NZ, is it an issue?
28:06
Well, Jamie, yeah, thanks for that.
28:07
And as you know, I was also brought up on a sheep farm in North Targo, so I do know it's been tough sheep farming down there for a while.
28:14
Our focus is on reducing methane and nitrous oxide emissions from ruminants to meet global customer goals and maintain market access and trade agreements.
28:22
And as long as our global customers continue to call for low emissions milk and meat, then that continues to be important for New Zealand because we export 95% of what we make.
28:33
And major customers, the premium customers across all markets actually, are calling for low-emissions products.
28:40
So that's the key driver.
31:46
Ultimately, will the market drive farmer behaviour when there's a premium for low emissions milk or meat? Farmers will be into it, boots and all?
