The first suggestion that I should write an autobiography was made by the late Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt some ten years ago.

I resisted his persuasive arguments... arguing that only a man at the end of his career or afterwards should write the story of his life.

To me then and now, the most fruitful years of work and living seem to lie ahead.

And I argued quite sincerely, I did not believe that there was a sufficient body of accomplishment to warrant an autobiography.

Teddy Roosevelt dismissed both contentions summarily.
