What does a teacher at the grade school level hear from and how does that sound after it's been found to be in the classroom?
28:15
Sure, that's a great question, and I think it varies widely depending on the school context.
28:23
First, even the idea of a book being perceived as controversial It could be from, like you said, many different sources, but also the knowledge of the text by the person making that challenge can be really various too.
28:40
So sometimes people see a title or they read a passage of a text that they find upsetting and say this text is inappropriate without really knowing what that text is or what it's about.
28:52
And so teachers and schools are encountering challenges that have various degrees of knowledge about the actual material that they're challenging.
29:01
At that stage, as I said, it depends on the school.
29:03
So some schools have policies in place, like written policies for how parents or others can challenge a text in their classroom or library.
33:40
Is it better to have one approach or the other? Is it better to have the whole class reading one book and talking about one book? Or is it better to have everyone reading something that might be more tailored to them? And that way you don't have essentially the battleground in the actual classroom.
