Just to set the scene for us, can you describe one of your recent visits with a granny, maybe the region, what you documented her making, what the day feels
1:13
like? In fact, I've just been filming in Romania, in the Fienza area.
1:20
And so we actually filmed the most wonderful woman called Anna.
1:25
And she's 93.
1:27
And she was very precise in her pasta making.
1:30
She had been a cook for a wealthy family.
1:33
And she had a very difficult start.

9:33
So after more than a decade of documenting these ladies, do you still feel you're witnessing the end of something? Or have you become more optimistic of what will survive? Yes.
0:48
She explained how the title of this, the third in the Pasta Granny series, was inspired by asking the nonnas what their favorite dish was.
0:56
Their answer was actually, first of all, a look like, "Is she mad?" [laughs] And then the reply, very politely, was, "Signora Vicky, I eat everything.
1:07
I have no favorites." Um, and I think that was kind of, uh, put me in my place really because it's a very middle class indulgence to say, "Ooh, I fancy a bit of this or that." You know, we are in London, and we're spoiled about what foods we eat.
1:21
And for many decades, these women didn't have that choice.
1:23
It was a, you know, their, theirs was a struggle to put food on the table.
1:27
And I think often, you know, our idea of, uh, we have so many rules and regulations around food these days, and, and for them, it was simple.
1:38
You know, could you feed your family today? And so they ate a little bit of everything, um, and they made sure that nothing went to waste at the same time.

19:43
Um, tell us a little about the process of finding, um, this particular person.
3:13
Can I ask you a question? What has changed, uh, in Italy, in Italian homes, so that some of these techniques and recipes are not being continued?
3:25
Um, the same changes that are happening everywhere else in the world.
3:29
Um, women are going out to work and simply don't have the time, and there is a continuing reliance on a nonna to make, uh, Sunday lunch, and that has served them well so far.
3:41
But I think the change is coming, is over the next 20 years, what nonna will be making, uh, will be quite different to up t- up to now.
3:51
Uh, so I thought, let's capture it while it's still there, and that's why I picked up the camera.

6 MINS LATER

9:46
I- is there a, a grandmother you particularly remember, uh, for whatever reason, you'd wanna share with us?
9:53
I think one of the things that comes through for me, and it's not necessarily a granny, is family life and their willingness to have a party at a drop of a hat.
10:05
Whenever we go there, it's a celebration, and we end up being surrounded by friends and family, um, toasting the grandmother and what she's made, and that, I think that's fantastic.
