Ub Iwerks

It's not super involved.

His name is Ub? Ub Iwerks, yeah.

This was back in the 1920s name.

Originally, they were going to be called Disney Iwerks, but people think they were selling eyeglasses because Iwerks sounds like somebody who works on eyeglasses.

And you and I had a conversation, and I mentioned it on Off the Ball as well.

You and I are of the firm belief that stories like John Thompson's story and the Iwerks disaster should be taught at schools.

Because you might learn, as you say, some authenticity, some humility and respect for your rivals.

And because it really affected Sam English as well.

I agree with you guys entirely.

yeah it's not great they should redo it or put something else in there or we'll talk about expressions to france a little bit that's another option next up is canada far and wide in circle vision 360. so there are a few shows there's really only two that are true these 360 shows where essentially they had this really cool rig that was created by Don Iwerks the son of Ub Iwerks who drew the first Mickey Mouse he helped to create this cool camera rig that could film in all directions at once and so when you're there it's like you're in these places it's filmed all around you The unfortunate thing is that most of this footage was filmed many, many years ago, so it does feel a little dated.

The good news, however, is they did recently redo this one for Canada.

The narration was redone by, if you're a fan of Schitt's Creek, it's Johnny and Moira Rose.

Kind of like, let's not lose sight of one thing, it all started with a mouse.

That phrase doesn't acknowledge Oswald, or Alice, or even Ub Iwerks.

But it's a cleaner story.

It's easier to tell.

And yet at the same time, he was also a link to the past and a link to the future.

He was a link to the past because his father was Ub Iwerks, Disney's original partner from Kansas City, said by many to be the true designer creator of Mickey Mouse, said by many to have been the person who drew every single drawing and background in the first three Mickey Mouse cartoons, which would have included Steamboat Willie.

inventor of the multi-plane camera, the circle vision system, et cetera, et cetera.

Ub Iwerks, just an amazing talent and very important person historically.

And yet at the same time, Don's daughter, is Leslie Iwerks, the documentary filmmaker, who in addition to being an Oscar nominee for some very serious documentary work, she also has done a tremendous number of video programs about Imagineering.

So she's teaching the next generation.

That was very popular in the, well, quite popular and prevalent in the 1930s.

Listen, the film I referenced was an Ub Iwerks film, right, which is a guy you've actually heard of.

So that should tell you about how prevalent this kind of thing was.

And so this was in addition to the fact that there was a lot of suspicion that some of this art, including the art in the T-shirt, had been generated by AI.

Thus, Mickey Mouse was born on that train in 1928.

Back in Los Angeles, Walt and his small team, including legendary animator Ub Iwerks, worked tirelessly to bring Mickey to life.

Mickey's first two cartoons had trouble finding distributors, but Walt struck on a groundbreaking idea, making animated cartoon with synchronized sound.

The result was Steamboat Willie.

Did John Favreau, when he went up on stage and talked about Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, did he also get into the history of Ub Iwerks and all the ways Disney kind of fucked him over?

Probably not.

It would be kind of interesting if he went on the D23 stage and was talking about that.

Who did he fuck over? Wait, what happened? I have no idea if I'm pronouncing this correctly.
