Ty Sperling

First person in the world cured of chronic granulomatous disease via prime editing gene therapy; UBC Okanagan science student from Kelowna, B.C.

He was born with a rare genetic condition called chronic granulomatous disease.
0:37
Yeah, so basically, it's just like a genetic condition that I, I was born with that makes it so my white blood cells couldn't fight off certain infections.
0:45
Like a day-to-day symptom I had was like I'd get lots of sores in my mouth that would just pop up randomly, and they're just, like infinitely hard to get rid of.
0:54
But the main concern was, like random life-threatening infections, basically out of the blue.

But in a world where the future can sometimes feel a little murky, stories like Ty's are a pretty remarkable reminder of what science can make possible and why there's still plenty of reason to be hopeful.
31:55
My life has changed in a lot of ways.
31:57
Uh, I don't have to worry about infections.
32:00
I can go out in nature and play, play dirty in nature.
3:34
How did that happen?
3:35
So I was cured through, uh, a new gene editing technology called prime editing.
3:40
Basically, like, Dr. Turby had brought up this trial to me and my family around October of, of last year.
3:48
Not last year, the year before last year, I guess.
3:50
And we heard about it before, but we were kinda on the fence 'cause it was new.
3:54
But eventually we decided to go with it.
3:56
And then the actual curing process was about March to May I was in the hospital.

How did they tell you that you had been cured of this disease?
