Ty Masterson

Kansas State Senator

Oct 12, 2026

34:07
It's a
34:07
team sport, too.
34:08
I mean, at this point, I mean, it's Republican versus Democrat, common sense versus crazy.
34:13
I mean, the decision is clear.
34:15
I mean, if center is anywhere in your description of yourself, center right, center left, it's not really a hard decision.
34:21
I mean, just go look at the records.
34:24
I mean, it's not... a complicated thing so we have to get out and there's some people that just go out and pull the lever i tell people this story because i hope it energizes them my last democratic opponent for my senate seat right so my kansas senate in 2024 never met her because she was never on the trail late 20s early 30s i'm not sure exactly how old she was unemployed listed her occupation on some of the documents as making sparkly headbands raised less than a thousand dollars and pulled down somewhere around 35 36 percent of the vote That point being, our opponents, our Democrat opponents, are going to have a floor of people that just go out and pull the lever.
35:48
Your faith centers you, and it's such an
1:16
a
1:16
team sport too i mean at this point i mean it's republican versus democrat you know common sense versus crazy i mean it's the decision is clear right i mean if center is anywhere in your description of yourself center right center left it's not really a hard decision i mean you go look just go look at the records i mean it's not a complicated thing so we have to get out and there's some people that just go out and pull the lever i tell people this story because i hope it energizes them my last democratic opponent for my senate seat right so like the kansas senate in 2024 never met her because she was never on the trail late 20s early 30s i'm not sure exactly how old she was unemployed listed her occupation on some of the documents as making sparkly headbands and raised less than a thousand dollars and pulled down somewhere around 35 36 percent of the vote That point being, our opponents, our Democrat opponents, are going to have a floor of people that just go out and pull the lever.
2:09
They don't care how crazy or where they're at or they're not paying attention.
2:13
So that's why it's so important for us to actually get out and cast a vote because when we show up, we win.
2:19
And I've been winning over independents too because I am in the middle in that sense.
2:23
And so I just would get out and vote and get all your friends to get out and vote.
2:57
Your faith centers you.
2:59
It's such an important part of your life.
39:43
Schools, what are you going to do to help our students improve learning? And what are you going to do to help us get teachers or keep
39:53
teachers? So that's another what I'm going to call crisis we're in.
39:56
And it's not just Kansas, by the way, right? I mean, education is struggling across the country.
40:01
And so we're able to see some things that are happening around the country.
40:03
So Kansas is now in the lower one-third for literacy outcomes.
40:09
Nearly three out of four fourth-graders can't read at grade level.
40:12
So that's a crisis we can't continue down the path and ignore.

11 MINS LATER

51:28
And how can Kansans feel confident that you will do the best thing for Kansas, even if that goes against Trump's agenda? I think
6:22
So take us outside of that, that bubble, and what are some of those issues and, and things that are mattering, and how you can keep that growth, or really keep from hemorrhaging people in other parts of Kansas, which has seen overall outflow migration the last few years.
6:38
Yeah, that's 100% true.
6:39
People in Johnson and even now, you know, western Wyandotte where there's lots of growth happening, that is a, that's a bubble in our state.
6:47
And I, I mean, it's good that that's part of what Kansas is growing.
6:50
But you get northwest in Kansas and you've got water issues that, by the way, property tax for them is still by far number one.
6:57
Transportation issues southwest.
6:59
We have to leverage the strengths of this state.
8:30
But, but what are you trying to message to people? Like, the, the biggest difference between yourself and your opponent is going to be what that will ultimately, in your eyes, decide this election?
4:00
I don't know if this is the candidate that you wanted or not, but as you see it, um, drawing the clear distinction between yourself and Overland Park Cindy Holscher, uh, what is the clearest distinction between the two of you right now as you get set for this general election campaign?
4:17
Oh man, it is.
4:19
You know, having served with her, you know, she's in the Kansas Senate there with me.
4:22
I mean, we have...
4:23
She has given us so much material and proof on where she's at.
4:28
I mean, when you've got a Democrat candidate that our governor, Democrat governors has called too extreme, that tells you where we're at.
4:36
So we're just mowing through it.
7:57
I wanna steal this or take this from this person, take that from that person"? Is there a state or a couple of states that you've developed relationships with that you wanna kinda pick and choose from what they've done well?
3:13
So how are you balancing that, and how are you taking that to the campaign trail these last few days?
3:18
Yeah.
3:19
Well, I mean, the key is it's not the only thing I have, right? All the...
3:22
I've also had the NRA, if the Second Amendment's your issue.
3:25
I have the Kansans for Life if life is your issue.
3:27
I have, I have the Chamber and AFP if business and regulation is your issue.
3:30
It's just not like I'm running solely on that.
7:35
How about the Supreme Court justice vote on Tuesday as well? Um, I, I know that obviously you're an advocate for it, but explain to people who may not really understand why they should wanna vote on their Supreme Court justices why you feel like that's such an important issue.
1:08
[laughs] I bet you are
1:09
... have left.
1:10
[laughs] Um, you know, like, it's what you'd expect from political opposition, right? I mean, whether it's the Star or the Refractor or Phil, I mean, it's, it's deceitful at best.
1:19
But I'm, I, I couldn't be more excited about what I do down there.
1:22
And so just like a good Republican, I want people to judge me on my outcomes, on my merits.
1:27
And that facility down there, we're changing, we're changing lives.
1:30
Nothing gets me more excited than a single mom with no degree starting a small business that's successful.
1:51
Because obviously people here in the Kansas City area probably won't be as familiar with, with, uh, this program at Wichita State, but what is GoCreate down at Wichita State?
2:54
So does that mean that you will not be taking swipes at your primary opponents the next few weeks?
3:00
Oh, I don't know if people caught it or not.
3:01
I didn't initiate anything in that debate.
3:04
I have not...
3:04
I've been trying to intentionally not attack any of my Republican friends.
3:08
There's only one of them that I feel open lane to do that with, and that's Vicki Schmidt, because, you know, she's...
3:13
Her record on fundamental things like life and Second Amendment are awful, and I want that's the focus to be.
7:10
Mm-hmm.
14:26
What can you do as governor to not spend so much money? 'Cause it looks like, you know, Topeka's gone wild here the last few years.
14:34
Well, you had all that, the numbers that you'll see, it's a point to they're all...
14:38
There was a whole b- ton of printed federal money that rolled through the system that blew things up.
14:43
And it is not wrong.
14:44
We have...
14:45
Laura Kelly has blown up the executive branch of the government by 60% on her side.
14:50
And so we have, the last two years, we've cut the budget year over year moving forward, and we have reduced taxes.

5 MINS LATER

20:17
What can you [laughs] do to stop these school districts? They've lost their minds, Ty.
14:49
What can you do as governor to not spend so much money? 'Cause it looks like, you know, Topeka's gone wild here the last few years.
14:57
Well, you had all that, the numbers that you'll see, it's a point to they're all...
15:01
There was a whole b- ton of printed federal money that rolled through the system that blew things up.
15:06
And it is not wrong.
15:07
We have...
15:08
Laura Kelly has blown up the executive branch of the government by 60% on her side.
15:13
And so we have, the last two years, we've cut the budget year over year moving forward, and we have reduced taxes.

5 MINS LATER

20:40
What can you do [laughs] to stop these school districts? They've lost their minds, Ty.
100:09
But again, going back to aside from the Trump endorsement, what is it that, that you're hearing from voters? Uh, what are the concerns on their minds there in Kansas?
100:17
Oh, the big, the big thing here in Kansas right now, number one issue everywhere is we're in a bit of a property tax crisis.
100:23
I mean, literally I have...
100:24
I mean, we have people paying...
100:26
Well, [laughs] got a gentleman across the street from me pays double in his property taxes alone than he did for his mortgage interest, insurance, and taxes combined when he paid his house off, and he's literally on the verge of losing his home.
100:36
And so we have...
100:37
And we, you know, first time home buyer age is now over 40, and that's, that's tearing away our young people's ability.
101:30
What, what, what sort of plans are, are you concocting, uh, to, to help the good people of Kansas?
2:22
So how do you think you separated yourself?
2:25
Sure.
2:25
I think what separated me – I guess if you're asking the question, what separated me for him was just we've been in the arena together now for a while, and he can go back and look.
2:33
I don't know if they – he even sent – the IGA, the Internal Government Affairs guy sent us – the White House sent us a letter saying, You know, praising our leadership and the ability even called said my leadership led Kansas to be a model state for implementing, you know, Trump's agenda, you know, conservative results in Kansas.
2:50
So they just they recognize that they like the way I operate and what I deliver and.
2:56
and so it was just a matter of
4:33
How would you calm people's concerns and nerves around that?
4:38
Yeah.
44:37
Yeah.
44:37
It's e- it's entirely local is some of the complexity being a state lawmaker.
44:40
We did just last year, we removed the state from the property tax.
44:44
There was about 90 million the state assessed in property and I felt like, you know, put your money where your mouth is and we got the state out of it.
44:50
Uh, but there's...
44:51
We're gonna have to, uh, probably have a constitutional amendment that changes the way that we as- assess property.
44:57
But we can do some things like electing appraisers and auditing local budgets.
48:30
Will you keep your house super majority?
