Wow.

But he ran a, a, a promotion company out there and a little crew called 98 Posse, and he promoted everything from raves to punk shows, hardcore shows, clubs, everything.

So I worked, I worked for Bill and just did whatever he needed me to do.

And I used to see Tim come through the barn to come to shows.

And so I met him way back, and I was just some kid that passed out flyers at the barn.

And then after In a Mother's State, I'd seen him a few times just around, and then I got a call on my phone and it was like, "Yo, Travis, it's Tim.

I got this project.

Yeah.

Do you remember that?

When my dad died, I was in fifth grade, and I had a sense of shame about it for some reason.

Like, I remember a kid wanted to come over...

I remember a kid wanted to come over to my house, and I, I was angry about it 'cause I didn't want him to see me, like, sad or just...

I didn't want anyone to acknowledge it.

Hmm.

I didn't really know a next step or a step to, to take after that happened except to pick up where I left off and keep playing drums.

So that's all I focused on, like, head down, play the drums.

'Cause your feet had been so badly burned.

My feet and legs, well, they, they weren't used for six months, right? So 30-something surgeries later, the doctors had said right off the jump, they're like, "You might not play drums again.

Might not be able to walk or run like you did before.

You're gonna be on these 20 medications for the rest of your life." The amount of trauma you went through, it was a little scary at first, right? And I was on all these medications, and honestly, they were making me feel awful.

I didn't feel like myself.

So I just stopped taking everything.

Would do all my therapy.

He was the guy you talked to.

I- why did you start it in 2017?

It was a conversation after my, my memoir come out, came out, uh, that the idea of a documentary was, like, presented to me.

And at the time, inside of our m- our management company, which was Deckstar, uh, which was, like, a management company DJ AM had started.

So one of the, the artists that they managed was Steve Aoki, and they had just done a documentary for Steve, and there, the ideas just started kind of, like, flowing.

And then just said, like, "Fuck it.

Okay, we're, we're, I'm, I'm gonna start filming immediately." And we started filming, but there was kind of no ending.

There was no, like, there was no light at the end of the tunnel because at the time, in 2017, after we filmed me on a boat traveling from, you know, transatlantic crossings from New York to London, 'cause I didn't fly, and I would, you know, be in a bus and a boat for, like, 30 days in order to get to Europe to tour.

And towards the end of the documentary, when Rocky's comes in the picture, i-it seems like there becomes more conversation about religion, and maybe-- or maybe it's just colloquial ways of saying, "Thank God for this opportunity," you know? How has religion shaped your, your career? 'Cause that really is the beginning of your drumming all the way to where you're at now.

How did you find that happening, and what did it feel like when it was?

Well, I, I, I'm still a risk-taker.

I love taking risks, but it happened so fast I didn't have time to think.

When one of my best friends, you know, flirts with me and, and, and shows me like, "Hey, I want more than this with you," I was like, "What?" [laughs] You know? Like, it feels, like, surreal.

Like, but those are the, those are those moments I live for, honestly.

As the doc reveals, Travis and Kourtney would embark on a fertility journey via IVF immediately following a heartbreaking loss.

We got pregnant and lost our baby, and after that it was like, I don't know what other people feel like, but you just want that back.

So we went through, like, a fertility journey to go try and see if we could get pregnant again.

What was that experience like?

Well, the beginning of it was, was shortly after my book came out, so I kinda understood why people wanted a doc from me at that point.

And, um, I was, I was honored, and I was flattered, and I was, you know, going down the journey of, of filming this doc, but it, it didn't really have an ending.

Um, I guess the light at the end of the tunnel during that time, around 2017, was that I was sober and I survived a plane crash.

But really, I was struggling with ever flying again, uh, struggling with survivor's guilt, struggling with a lot of stuff.

Uh, and at the time, the directors had mentioned to me, like, "Can you just look at a plane or act like you're gonna go fly in a plane or walk towards a plane?" I was like, "Fuck no.

I would never.

Did you ever try using a hyperbaric chamber?

Mm

... and I thought there was, like, so many good learning lessons from my, my doc, whether it's if you're from a small town and your parents don't have money and you're, you know, grow up very, you know, minimal, like low income family, you, you could still dream and you could still, you know, achieve your dreams and, and succeed if you just keep pushing.

Um, and then the story of, you know, like, just survival, you know, whether it's like when my mom died or, uh, my, my plane crash, it's like you have a couple choices.

You can either curl up in a ball and let the world just, you know, like, completely take, take over you and give up, or you can fight and, you know, even come back stronger than you were.

But it's not, like, from a sort of reflective, like, "Wow, we had wild times, man" It was almost like, "How did we survive that?" was the vibe I got from the way he was talking.

I mean, my story's interesting.

Uh, I'd like to say I would've figured out a way, or I would've made the decision.

I think, I'm pretty confident I would have with, with the way my life panned out with m- all my beautiful children and my family and stuff.

If it was, like, Paul's Boutique or it was a Minor Threat album or whatever my sisters were listening to.

The biggest one was to skate in, in my neighborhood at the older kids' skate ramp.

They would kinda say, like, "The only way you can come skate our ramp is you, you learn And Justice for All Metallica from front to back." So I'd go home and I'd learn those records.

I had all these cool things around me that really shaped who I am and, and my drumming and what I sounded like.

What is it about the Descendents that is-

To me, they kinda picked up where The Ramones left off, where I was into more aggressive stuff, but I was also into Gorilla Biscuits, Dag Nasty, where it was melodic still.

But Descendents was, like, songs about girls, songs about not being a loser, songs about food.

Oh, it wasn't checked that day?

Mm-mm.

No, I mean, the, to, to the best of, of their ability, but it was so last-minute, and I, and no one's thinking, you know? 'Cause at this time everyone's like, "Trav, realistically, you're never gonna get in a plane crash.

Stop." You know? Every flight I'd be on, like, Mark and Tom even would be...

You know, before that, they'd be like, "Dude, why are you white-knuckling?" Like, I would, I would have a rosary that I would hold onto.

That was my mom's rosary, and I was like, it w- it took everything in me to fly where, like, when we'd land, I'd be like, "I'm gonna do this.

I'm gonna do this.

Like, just walk me through what you can even remember of that horrific moment.

Mm

... you know, very, uh, uh, supportive and would pick my brain.

But I, I also did practice hours a day.

My, my parents, no one was musically gifted or played any instruments, but, uh, my dad was in the military, was like, you know, fought in Vietnam, uh, rode a Harley, and was a steel mill worker.

Mm-hmm

... where there is so much attention on all three members, but I, honestly, you know, the same thing happened.

The, you know, we're on tour with The Aquabats, their drummer takes off about 45 minutes before the show.

They were gonna have to cancel the show.

Do you think it's because she knew how it would affect you and she wanted to give you some guidance as to how you should heal, how you should deal with this?

Maybe.

It wasn't like anyone in our family was musical.

From a young age, from the time I saw Animal and the Muppets, I was playing drums.

Like, I was, I was playing pots and pans.

I was really into music.

And w- when she passed away, it was all I had, too.

Wow.

One of my buddies, um, Neil Long, who, who works over at, at WWE and, and TKO, he was like, "I...

That's, you know, hometown for me." And he's like, "Well, I was talking to the UFC, and we were all talking, you know, together, and we thought it would be cool to do something bigger with you, uh, to start off the new year with Paramount," whatever.

And I was like, "Oh, yeah, just wha- whatever you guys think of, let me know." And I honestly, Ariel, I thought they were just gonna be like, "Can you come?" You know? Or, "Are you gonna be there, 'cause we're in LA?" Um, I never thought it was this.

So, yeah.

I think for me it was after everything I went through, they, they actually told me I wouldn't run.

They said, "You won't run again.

Your, you know, from all the stuff that happened to your, your foot and your grafts, you're not gonna be running again.

Might not be playing drums again." So I just started, like, checking off everything they said I couldn't do.

Like bam, bam.

Yeah, yeah.
