mean, let me answer that and then get back to South Korea and Canada, because I don't want to dodge your question.

But because I did sort of go in a little bit of a tangent on allied responses, but I thought it was just important to, to describe, I think, how allies have generally responded, right? So there hasn't been hard, hard pushback, there's been push back in some important areas.

I'll get to that in a second, but I guess I'm sort of half or a third supportive of where Kurt and Russia are, but not fully.

I mean, I think they are right to say that allies want the alliances to work, right? And they want the alliances to work because of their external threat environment.

think that's correct i think that's the reason why they've been bending over backwards to work with trump even though they don't trust him and don't like him um and even though he's been very very provocative toward them where i disagree i'm not optimistic like i i don't think we should say and i don't i'm not even sure i need to check i've only read the piece once but you know i certainly wouldn't say as you described it you know we don't really have any need to worry or You know, actually the future is bright.

I think we've enormous and I imagine they would probably agree with this.

And could the Biden administration have done more? And I mean, I suppose this is also like going back to the previous question, a microcosm of broader challenges to America's industrial capacity during this competition, which might feed into a sense that there's no hope for in confronting China perhaps even a sense of defeatism and that it's potentially more realistic to accommodate China since you know America well we have this long and we never got we never woke up and not even after waking up we're still not getting out of bed so you know might as well give up

There's talk of NATO 3.0. Tell us if this was an important summit and tell us anything else you want to say on the future of NATO.

Yeah, I mean, I think it's definitely an important summit.

I also think it's an unnecessary summit because I think with the Trump administration and President Trump in particular, he has a level of hostility to Europe and to NATO that's quite visceral.

And the name of the game, I think, for European leaders is to get him to sort of a stable place that they can be satisfied with.

Right.

It's sort of a good enough equilibrium that they're looking for.

And I think at various points they have gotten to that, I think.

Do you think we're closer to a settlement or a ceasefire?

But with these resignations, Tom, kind of what piqued your interest most and what does it tell you?

Yeah, I think, you know, just to pick up where Shashank left off, I think to me, I think these were clearly sort of resignations of principle, right? John Healy's Labour sort of loyalist, a Starmer loyalist.

This was not about positioning with the forthcoming leadership contest.

You know, I don't think they were trying to get rid of Starmer.

I think it was sort of what it appeared to be in that they had been working to increase UK defence spending.

They were worried that it was not increasing fast enough, that there would be a gap in Britain's capabilities in terms of what it would need to defend the country and its interests overseas.

They had made that point repeatedly to the Prime Minister.
