He's a curator of paleontology at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, and he told me that about the time of the mid-1990s, that was when they first started the recreation of dinosaur sounds.

Tom WilliamsonGUEST
They're very rare dinosaurs, and they're really remarkable because they have this huge crest that extends from the, the top of their skull.

Tom WilliamsonGUEST
The whole skull length is about six feet, and this thing really looks like an alien, like from the movie Alien, where they have this, this projection that, that sticks out of the top of their head.

Tom WilliamsonGUEST
The weird thing is, unlike what you see with modern birds with what they call a casque on top of the head, like there's hornbills and cassowaries have these casques, with this dinosaur, it's hollow, but it actually has tubing in it that's tied into its breathing passages.

Tom WilliamsonGUEST
When this dinosaur ma- makes any kind of a sound, it would resonate naturally within this structure that's sticking out of the top of their head, so it's like a built-in musical instrument.

Tom WilliamsonGUEST
When we collected this, we wanted to know what the internal structure of this thing looked like, so we brought it to a local hospital and had it X-rayed, uh, you know, with a CT scanning machine, and it revealed this very intricate arrangement of tubing inside of its head, which is an extension of its respiratory passages.

Georgia TolleyHOST
It sounds like an obvious question, but why is it important for us to try to imagine what dinosaurs sounded like?

Tom WilliamsonGUEST
So the day job, we have four faculties here at RU Peterborough, and I'm responsible for leading two of those.
