A
32:24Alonso DuraldeHOST
But that's what that has been coming up in the last week or so.
A
32:29Alonso DuraldeHOST
And it just, it reminds me of Todd Phillips, you know, who, let's not forget, his career started with a big, you know, Sundance splashy documentary that he did about like frat guys that got picked up by some distributor and they found out they had actually like staged a lot of it.
C
32:46Christy LemireHOST
Oh.
A
32:47Alonso DuraldeHOST
Yeah.
Kulture Meltdown: Clayface (2026) — "They stole everything from me."
B
45:57Bryan RenfroGUEST
which is kind of funny, actually.
C
45:59Chris StachiwHOST
Yeah, I found it very entertaining and amusing, and I think Todd Phillips, you know, he's not my favorite director, but he definitely was as, I think, as irked by the reaction to his first movie as I was, which is like, look at how much this
B
46:12Bryan RenfroGUEST
is so great, la la la.
B

It's like, fuck
Clayface (2026) - N for New Special Cinema To The Letter
T
16:32ThomasHOST
He seems kind of generic, but I love some Gotham goons.
T
16:36ThomasHOST
some guys and i think this movie has a fair amount like really solid character actors like cory johnson who's one of my favorite that guy so i love seeing pop-up and things he's like the guy with the gray hair who ends up being sort of a major disguise for hagan at a certain point i think he's phenomenal i like the kind of backdrop of gotham here feels more like you know as opposed to say uh todd phillips's joker where it's like that's just a major metropolitan city this feels more like a gotham Like, I believe, like, the mob goons and everything feel very distinctly of, like, that weird any urban environment city that I think works for it.
T
17:09ThomasHOST
And I second, obviously, all the gore effects.
T
17:11ThomasHOST
So there's a lot of, like, great, fun gore effects.

R

The 2024, quote, jukebox musical legal drama was directed by Todd Phillips, written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver, and stars Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix.
P

The film has a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 5.2 out of 10 on IMDb, one out of four stars from Robert Ebert, and 2.3 out of five on Letterboxd.
P
1:05PatrickHOST
Is it Roger Ebert? I think I wrote Robert in the thing.
C
1:46Cache TaylorGUEST
like, I don't think I realized just how bad it was on Rotten Tomatoes, just how bad it was on R&B.
C
1:52Cache TaylorGUEST
Yeah,
P
1:52PatrickHOST
people, well, I think... god where do we start i think there are a few schools of thought about why that is the way it is yeah some people like immediately were like oh musical lady gaga i'm just automatically not gonna like this because i am i resonated with the dc film i'm Or the first Todd Phillips film because it's this darker side of the DC universe and it's kind of very much like incel-coded.
P
2:19PatrickHOST
And then it's like, oh, they're making a musical.

Any of the lore.
H
44:47HeathHOST
I mean, it just it seemed like that was not what Todd Phillips was interested in.
H
44:51HeathHOST
It could have been called anything.
H
44:53HeathHOST
You know, they just added enough to justify it being Joker.
S
46:36SamHOST

Carrie
J
16:41JohnHOST
That is so baffling, uh, of a choice and we'll get to it when we get to it.
J
16:45JohnHOST
But, um, yeah, in a lot of ways, the, I was thinking about this is that the original book and De Palma's movie, it Todd Phillips, the Joker is male carry.
J
16:58JohnHOST
Uh, it's that it's, it's a person that's like put upon by, you know, has this insane mother, horrible home life, trying their best.
J
17:06JohnHOST
And then like the outside world hates them too, but they're also pretty fucked up and vengeful and weird.

F
32:56FalconHOST
Todd Phillips, the Joker guy, he uses... lawrence sure is his name is his cinematographer and has has worked with him going back to um old school like the movie old school like they have made the same that they're and like a lot of their crew is the same yeah and it's like there's a reason why you do that it's because i know i can work with those people i know the quality of their work i know what they bring to the table and that like I completely agree.
F
33:27FalconHOST
That is something that people very rarely speak about when you're talking about the quote-unquote auteur, the singular vision.
F
33:35FalconHOST
It's not really a singular vision.
