39:32
It's like, okay.
39:32
Yeah, we'll give it a go.
39:33
So we recorded it and we put our own spin on it on this kind of 80s synth song.
39:38
And then it was used in the soundtrack, but it was also used on the ad here in Australia.
39:44
And then, yeah, so it went to number one in 2006.
39:46
But we were in the middle of recording the next album, actually, in Los Angeles, as you do, like while it was going to number one.
39:53
So it was all happening here in Australia, but while we were away.
41:23
But you wouldn't have thought that when you were recording
0:51
Let's dance in style, let's dance for a while
1:13
Heaven can wait, we're only watching the skies Hoping for the best but expecting the worst Are you gonna drop the bomb or not? Let us die young or let us live forever Don't have the power but we never say never Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip Music's for the sad man Can you imagine when this race is run? Turn our golden faces into the sun.
1:49
Praising our leaders, getting in tune.
1:53
Music's played by the
1:54
madman.
1:57
Forever young, I want to be forever young.
2:08
Forever Forever Forever Some are like water, some are like the heat Some are the melody, some are the beat Sooner or later they'll all be gone But don't they stay young? It's hard to get on without a cause I don't want to perish like a failing horse Youth is like diamonds in the sun Diamonds are forever So many adventures couldn't happen today So many songs that we forgot to play So many dreams swinging out of the blue We let them come true Forever
4:57
And the lyric line is so, as we all get older, doesn't it kick you everywhere in the heart, doesn't it, that song? Yeah.
0:56
Talk us through what that period of your life must have been like.
0:59
Um, yeah, it was, it was, it was quite surreal for us.
1:03
We, um, so the OC had played our song Shadowland, um, the previous year and then 2005, I guess, uh, they asked us to do a cover of Forever Young and, um, it wasn't something that we necessarily chose, but when you're asked by the OC, I guess it's like, it's pretty strong, you know, feeling to say yes.
1:22
It's like, okay.
1:23
Yeah, we'll give it a go.
1:24
So we recorded it and we put our own spin on it on this kind of 80s synth song.
1:30
And then it was used in the soundtrack, but it was also used on the ad here in Australia.
3:13
But you wouldn't have thought that when you were recording
30:31
So love it.
30:32
You segued for me.
30:34
So let's talk about Rory Sutherland.
30:38
And.
30:39
This is maybe I've got loads more planned out here, but I think this is the last one we'll have time for, maybe.
30:46
So anyone who's interested in there's loads more like practical takeaways about listings and winning instructions from the likes of Vicky Papiris, Julian O'Dell.
30:57
um and and for those quite frankly you can probably go back to previous episodes of this podcast uh because they'll they'll have chatted to gatesy about it but also like you can watch most of those sessions back so um but but i want to pick on a couple more of the slightly more unusual ones yeah and um rory selden was definitely one of those and you're saying rory is unusual Rory is just the most brilliant eccentric.

22 MINS LATER

53:26
Yeah, I
29:41
Historian and musician Toby Martin takes us through it.
29:44
The project is called Hearing the Music of Early New South Wales.
29:47
It's a project funded by the Australian Research Council and it's been going for the last three years.
29:53
There's a whole lot of different researchers on it at the University of Sydney.
29:56
So there's me and I kind of look at the, I guess... popular music, folk music stuff of the day.
30:03
There's Neil Perez de Costa, there's Amanda Harris and there's Jacqueline Troy.
30:08
And each person is sort of looking after a slightly different part of the project.

But steering up along a side, I found it was a crocodile, and from his nose to the tip of his tail he measured five hundred miles.
43:21
It, it depends what the notification is.
43:22
[laughs] No, pretty much steer clear of the phone checking.
43:25
Um, but yes, if you're going to, uh, if you're gonna be in a room, be in the room.
43:32
Gi- give it your full and undivided attention.
43:33
And we, you know, we talked about distractions and e- all the different things that are challenging for our attention at the moment.
43:39
Um, a- and that was just one example, but it was a particular, particular one that kind of struck a chord with me.
43:45
Um, but yeah, Nigel risen to be in the room, give people your full and u- and undivided attention.

9 MINS LATER

53:14
And you said you had one more personal one, did you?
48:26
We remember Myall Creek
48:28
CreekWe remember Waterloo Creek.
48:33
We remember Slaughterhouse Creek.
48:37
We remember Myall Creek.
48:41
We remember Myall Creek.
48:46
We will remember them
50:44
Yes
50:44
... um, a great Aboriginal songwriter and, um, I knew that Uncle Roger was also interested.
50:44
Yes.
50:45
Um, a great Aboriginal songwriter.
50:47
And, um, I knew that Uncle Roger was also interested.
50:49
So somehow, somehow we got connected.
50:52
We met talking about that.
50:53
Yeah.
50:54
But then, then we started writing songs together, and I got asked to come to a songwriting residency that Uncle Roger was doing that I, I came along to, and we started writing songs.
51:03
And then-
