I, I'm guessing you aren't particularly surprised by Mati's headline conclusions here.
Timandra HarknessGUEST
I'm not hugely surprised, but it is really nice to find somebody actually doing the research instead of just going, "Oh, well, we all know that the internet is full of AI made-up stuff and..." Um, I mean, for example, we actually hear a lot that the internet is full of bots producing dissent and argument and conflict and, and in fact, your research seems to have found the opposite, certainly in terms of websites.
Timandra HarknessGUEST
So and s- and then some of the other things that you checked into didn't seem to check out.
Timandra HarknessGUEST
You're like, "Well, actually, there's no evidence for this." So it is really nice to have some- Yeah, some firm, [chuckles] some firm evidence that we hopefully can rely on 'cause it's produced by, you know, Mati's here.

So why would you not want that? But I think the problem arises when safety trumps all other values.

So there's a famous proverb, in fact, which is a ship is safe in a harbour, but that's not what ships are for.
T

And I think that's because if we'd really just wanted to be safe, we would have said, well, let's not take the boat out at all.
T
4:56Timandra HarknessGUEST
Let's leave the boat tied up and let's stay in the bar and look out of the window at the river.
T
5:01Timandra HarknessGUEST
But that's like the whole point of having a boat is so that you can go out, you know, in our case, just for fun.

Why do you think people and institutions might prefer being conventionally wrong together rather than unconventionally right?

Can this happen, Tamandra? Can the US and China reach an agreement on global regulation on AI? Is this the point where we start to tackle AI in the same way that we managed, at least for a long period of time, to tackle nukes?
Timandra HarknessGUEST
And Americans obviously look at China going, they're coming up fast on AI, and if they haven't overtaken us yet, they will, like they are with a lot of other stuff.
Timandra HarknessGUEST
And it also makes sense of Trump's resistance to the kind of Anglo-European push to have AI regulated and limited and slowed down and controlled, that he...
