So these volunteers, what typically, what kind of calls does Lane County Search and Rescue go on, and what kind of calls would these volunteers be participating
4:01
in? So one super fun thing about Search and Rescue in Lane County is, one, our county is about the size of the state of Connecticut.
4:10
So we have a lot of calls.
4:15
And not that every volunteer goes on every call, but we're a very busy county.
4:19
We're usually among the top three in Oregon for call outs.
4:24
And then it's a very geographically diverse county.
4:27
So we have, you know, we're from the Pacific Ocean to Waldo Lake and everything in between.
6:27
And with the volunteers, what are you looking for with the applicants to make them a good candidate to be a volunteer?
20:31
obviously you mentioned getting everyone on the same page but it comes down to the locker room how are you developing the culture in the locker room and then what standards are you expecting from the players and obviously with them all as a group
20:44
yeah that's a big question to answer thank you for that look for me you've got to be a good teammate is the most important thing and we talked about that a lot and I think if If they're not good teammates, right, I think it comes down to the leaders and the group to wake them up, to shape up or ship out.
21:04
So that's the first step.
21:06
We're one week in, we've got a long ways to go, but, you know, it starts with habits and practice, right? Do you stop at the net? Do you start on the line? Do you know the dang drill? So, look, I could go a long way with the standards we're trying to develop, but the second it dips, right, that's my job to get them going.
23:07
What do you remember being here as a player? Did
23:09
you like coming here? Like coming here as an opponent, no.
23:13
As an opponent, I did not like coming here because we're trying to win and it's not easy, right? I think...
23:19
You know, I remember coaching in Nottingham that the crowd's on top of you.
5:47
So those different teams,
5:49
the way that we're structured, and again, it's unique in every county.
5:53
There's history that plays into it, which I think is really cool.
5:58
So our program, the way it's structured, almost every volunteer starts in ground search and rescue, which is its own nonprofit under the sheriff's office.
6:08
But that's kind of our bread and butter ground searchers that is the bulk of our missions, the core of what we do.
6:16
Those are the people that go out looking for your lost mushroom pickers, little kid that goes missing from home, your Alzheimer's walk away.
6:24
Even if it's in the city, you know, we're responsible for search and rescue in the entire county.

5 MINS LATER

11:38
But talk about the importance of finding somebody who passed away and what that means to you, to the volunteers, but of course, to the people that they leave behind.
