And before we go to Jim, let me just ask you, what's the percent chance working Americans will see a $5,000 dividend from the president, do you think?

It's a 0% chance.

None of the other promises came through.

And look, they can't afford this one.

It's $1.3 trillion for this stimulus check, or it's not even a stimulus check for this, whatever you want to call it.

And I think at the end of the day, the real problem for them is that they are playing catch-up.

They are playing catch-up.

Tim, what do you think of that bit of business?

I say then, walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

So we won't get to diving into that text a whole lot yet, but that's the text that the whole passage centers around, and we will begin to unfold this on our Sunday nights here.

Before we go into this text...

I want to help you think.

When you look at the lay of the land, What are the most important debates happening right now, either sort of within so-called the political right, conservatism and sort of that side of the aisle, or just generally speaking, either principle or policy debates? What are the most important debates you see happening right now?

Well, let me offer just two backdrops and then I'll get into actual policies.

I I think one of the things that's a real challenge for us right now as conservatives is the character issue.

I just – look, at your core, when you're a political leader, you're going to be put in some of the toughest situations ever.

and challenging situations that you can imagine.

And we need people in office with good character.

And right now, we're not doing that.

So how do you balance all these things together in a way that equips you to make a difference for the future?

[laughs]

... because, as you know, we, we shared some time together at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, and most of the people who did not live in DC lived in Northern Virginia, and there was always sort of a, the, you- people would look down their nose at the idea of mo- moving to Maryland because it's so liberal.

But look, there were some very practical considerations for starters.

You know, Northern Virginia is in- pretty, pretty pricey, and if you've got four kids, you know, and you want them to have some space, and you want to have a, a decent-sized yard in a neighborhood, you know, if you're going to Virginia, you're talking about going an hour and a half away, and to get that same kind of thing.

And at that time, the Davidsonville community and other parts of Anne Arundel County were really attractive in terms of, like, housing prices.

And then I do think, you know...

I, I, I often tell people, yes, Maryland is a blue state, but there are pockets of Maryland that are very conservative, as you know.

Hmm.

What's going on with the conservative movement (laughs)?

Yeah, I mean, we're having a crisis of conscience right now.

Uh, and I think a lot of conservatives are unsure, uh, of the principles that we built this movement on, and whether those are sustainable for the future and can be adapted to the time we live in right now.

I look back at it, and I try to take the long view of this.

I think you look at the last 20 years of Republican leadership, um, and some conservative leadership, and you can identify areas where there began to be a break between rank and file conservatives at the grassroots level, um, and Republican leaders.

And I looked through, you know, I looked through at the ear- the first decade of the 2000s, and I looked through the, the Bush years, and I, and I remember very well, um, being one of those foot soldiers in the conservative movement, and being very disenchanted, uh, with our inability as Republicans to grapple s- with some of the big issues facing this country, in particular, the growth of the size and scope of the federal government.

And so I think you began to see some real dissatisfaction at that time, and you began to have grassroots conservatives move away from their loyalty to the leadership of the Republican Party because they were so upset about our ability to deliver.

We're happy with that." And I guess I wonder what your thoughts are on why someone in his position would say the things that he said in that video.
