100 years right and they were there same with roads and things like that they may have been there for 30 years before they need to be upgraded with data centers the lifetime is what three years before they need to to be upgraded is that right

Tia CollingsGUEST
So actually it's probably about 10 years that we say a data center's life stands for.

Tia CollingsGUEST
But what we're seeing is that the rate of improvement of AI GPUs is happening like Moore's law has gone out the window.

Tia CollingsGUEST
we saw a 34 times doubling of that so Moore's law is we have shot straight past Moore's law and that means are we going to be updating these data centers every three years are we going to be putting in GPUs and if we watch what NVIDIA is saying it's saying that there's a benefit to do that because there will be you know cost reduction we might be using a more energy or better energy consuming chip, something like that.

Tia CollingsGUEST
But then what is the impact if we have to do that? I think the other part to your question as well is if we're not updating the data center or we're not having to reassess the data center's impact over time, are we locking in designs now today that might be burning gas or using other sources of energy that might not be the most renewable? Are we going to help data centers move off that later? And that becomes a really broad question because can we force them to have double capex? Can we force them to buy something now and then have to buy something later? So does that then become a government piece that we need to support so in australia we've said our goal was by 2030 um 82 of the grid would be renewable right so if we hit that goal and i don't think we'll hit it on 2030 but maybe we hit it somewhere near that if we hit that goal that's pretty amazing in terms of data centers being able to tap into that renewable energy source and run off that and it takes this big pressure off data centers to have to bring their own um or look at things like gas so that's that's amazing but Are we going to keep reassessing over time? And I think your kind of question and a lot of this concern that's coming is that at the moment we don't reassess the data center's power usage effectiveness when it's built and then we kind of leave it alone in Australia.

Tia, how much waste exists in the current system we have?
