Our recent report into unpaid overtime is, um, a continuation of, of reports that we've done on the same issue over the past five years.

Thomas CostaGUEST
Um, unfortunately, this year our findings were that about 88% of all workers reported doing some form of unpaid overtime, and on average, um, they were performing about 7.8 hours additional overtime a week, um, which is almost an extra d- well, a little bit over an extra day's work per week, uh, when you add it up.

Thomas CostaGUEST
If you, if you kind of assess this along average wages, it's about $22,000 sacrificed in, in average earnings a year per worker.

Thomas CostaGUEST
Well, AI has been sold to workers as a economic efficiency tool, um, and unfortunately, it appears to be more of a Trojan horse, um, than a benefit to workers.

Thomas CostaGUEST
Um, more broadly, uh, at Unions New South Wales, we're looking at the impact of AI in workplaces to really understand what it's actually doing to the type of work and how people work.

Thomas CostaGUEST
I think that has been overlooked in the hype in that, um, AI is now designing how people work, and we've heard from workers, not in this study, but, but through our affiliate unions and, and talking to workers, um, that many workers feel they now work for their employer, but they also work for AI as well, uh, because their employer is giving them a task to do, um, but then using the tech systems, AI is also giving them work to do, and they're, they're increasingly having to ask questions that are designed by algorithms being put to them, um, being forced to use it in a way they're being manipulated into training the AI into doing their own job.
