Because you listen to the early rap records through the eighties, even early nineties when quality and most deaf and all them came out, it was a lot of consciousness in it.

You know, the beats were abstract, jazzy tribe, all that.

And then as labels consolidated and they sucked up other labels, they were like, okay, This song sounds cool with mumble rapping or let's let's break down these beats to a simpler form.

Not like an LL Cool J. I can't live without my radio form, but like almost sounds like toyish keyboard sounds.
