Well, so I think, think he kind of viewed the vietnam war and everything around it as like kind of the story of his lifetime you know which it is for you know like the boomer generation i mean uh you know it's kind of receded now but i mean there was a 10 15 year period or more that like all art and literature and music and everything grew out of the vietnam war and you know america's you know uh participation in it and, and, and the, the reaction to it.

And, you know, he was one of the first, you know, he, he was a, a war protester, you know, his dad was a, was, you know, part of the, you know, the American government's operation, you know, in, in, in vietnam and in southeast asia and he went against that and and you know protested the war and went to jail and as a freshman in college he spent a week in jail for protesting and um so you know and and he he grew up in um uh, Philippines and, and Tokyo.

And while, you know, all of his dad, his dad's, you know, friends and everything, we're all involved in, in, um, the American war effort.

So his whole life is Vietnam, you know, or like it's, it's part of the, you know, the atmosphere and, and, um, at the, when he was in college and he was like, I was talking about, you know, what's my first novel going to be? He had decided, well, it's not going to be about Vietnam, you know, like everyone else is writing them, but he still had it in him, you know, that he was going to at some point.
