What decided you on the fact that, well, maybe I've had it?

Well, I had recurring trouble with a bad back.

It had started a great number of years ago and seemed to, well, it was in a dormant condition and then I managed to break my back at Saratoga about five or six years ago and subsequently these sacroiliac attacks came back and when it began to get a little too frequent I decided that I'd better give it up.

Does this require a lot of love?

I don't think so, Jack.

It seems to me that, oh, probably 10 or 15 percent of even the top riders, to me, have no real love of the animal.

In fact, it's simply a tool, and they have no particular interest.
