The whole first half of my career was spent doing reporting and writing.

And I love the reporting, and I love the interviewing, and I love the digging.

My favorite part of writing is, as we said in magazine writing, the crafting of the lead, the opener of the piece.

I love writing the lead.

I spend a great deal of, I'll spread all of my notes all over the dining room table, and I'll think, what is the moment from our conversations, my interviews, that just gels the essence of the person I'm writing about or the story that I'm writing about? And I put a great deal of time into writing that lead.
