Like, other than saying to your nine-year-old or your 13-year-old, "You'll thank me when you're an adult," because [laughs] that doesn't really work, right? Like, h- how do we get teens sort of on board with the, the chores?
10:24
Yeah.
10:24
So Katie, I think a couple of things.
10:26
I think outside of explosive moments, I think that, um, saying to our family, you know, to our kids, our teens, "This is what we do as a family.
10:33
We all help as a family.
10:35
Uh, we cook together as a family.
10:36
We connect over food." Talking about family values outside of tense moments is huge because then they just go like, "Okay, even though I'm gonna reject it because as a teen that's part of what I do, it's part of my identity formation is to say like, I don't wanna, I don't know, help." Ultimately, in years to come, they'll go, "This is who my family is." So really putting those values in place in different places where it doesn't feel like we're lecturing either, just small little snippets, is huge.
14:57
Is this a general shift? Is it a lack of resilience in teens? Like, do you have a theory about the root cause there?

And then keep your ears open because we might just answer it in an upcoming episode.
16:42
And, you know, if you talk to parents, they'll say, "You know what, Tanya? My kid has learned so much from a TV show.
16:46
They're saying words that I know that I haven't actually taught my kidda.
16:50
They're not in any formal programming.
16:51
It's come from the TV." I'm going to say yes, that's there, but we know that deep learning happens from, again, that exploratory hands-on play.
17:01
So there needs to be this beautiful mix.
17:04
If and when possible, we turn those TVs off, we turn the screens off.

What about the types of toys or materials are most beneficial at this age?
