What do you think is breaking down in the way the so-called development sector tells its stories? And why are those approaches struggling to resonate now?

Well, so for decades, the international development sector has been telling stories of need and poverty and despondency because they thought that's what the British public needed to hear to feel a sense of connection to people based in global majority countries.

So we wanted to know if we presented to them a more progressive story of how development action could look like.

what would they think and feel? So we commissioned development engagement labs housed at University College London and University of Birmingham to understand what thousands of people across the UK thought when they were presented with that.

And so we were really interested with those insights because they were much more hopeful than we were expecting it to be.

And we've just launched them in a report called Shifting Narratives, Eight Agency.

Tania, one challenge is, of course, how we use culture and narrative to bring issues that traditionally we've addressed with the wonky policy reports like trade or climate justice or debt, which are obviously important because we need the policy making on those issues, but we need the public to help us push to have the policies that can really deliver fair outcomes.
