So how did that experience kind of shape the doctor that you became?

Well, I knew that I wanted to be a family medicine doctor.

I thought I wanted to practice in a rural area, have my own practice.

And I think being in the Navy made me Want to do that even more.

Although the military is, it was a very good experience for me, I discovered that the military, at that time, and this was in the '80s, um, the military was still very divided in a lot of ways.

Um, women were still not as welcomed maybe as they are today.

So I knew that I wanted to be someplace where I was taking care of rural people and disadvantaged people.
