I just have so many questions [laughs]

Yeah, they'd have to be... they'd, they'd have to be, they'd have to be relatively fast to escape the gravitational pulls of their galaxies.

If they leave the galaxy, sort of enter intergalactic space, then they could still be confined by the gravity of the cluster.That they're in.

In the same way we believe that there are trillions perhaps of rogue stars that inhabit the intergalactic space in be- or the intracluster medium, if you want to call it that.

There's probably black holes in there as, as well.

So there was a study from about 2021, I think it was, in which some researchers started new simulations, and they suggested that there could be 10 or a dozen or so num- smaller black holes sort of in orbit around the Milky Way, which were stripped out of little dwarf galaxies that the Milky Way ate in order to become the size it is today.

So how do scientists try and study these things?

Yeah, it's really difficult because un- unless a black hole runs into something, it's not gonna give off any light.

So he set out to calculate the cost, to give it a label, something you could size up at a glance and maybe act on, the way we do when we shop for a car, checking the miles per gallon, or when we buy a dishwasher with that Energy Saver sticker slapped right on the front.

You know, we're making choices there based on energy rating, like, you know, how many miles to- a gallon a car does, how much CO2 it uses.

And it's kind of like, well, if I had that information to, to hand, I could make a conscious decision when I was using an app, for example.

[music] But some of this data is just incredibly hard to actually find.

Um, the industry isn't as transparent as it needs to be.

Some companies are already experimenting with this, cooling data centers more efficiently and cutting energy use nearly in half, and Stuart says that's the equivalent of taking a million cars off the road.

We just have to choose our path here, and how to do this in a way that's both healthy for us as humans, and then healthy for us as a planet.
