What happened?

The Americans at the last minute, uh, tried to change the terms of the deal.

We don't have all the, uh, details of that, but one of the things, uh, Mr. Carney, uh, Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters on Saturday is that, uh, the US wanted to restrict Canada's ability to sign trade deals with other countries.

As, as well, we've learned that they were, um, trying to change the, the calculations for steel exports and wanted us to remove French labeling requirements, uh, even though we have a country with, uh, you know, seven million French speakers.

So those are a few details.

W- what about the reaction in Canada, um, given all those, well, thousands of job losses you've been talking about? Is, is, um, Prime Minister Carney under any pressure to, to get something else on the schedule?

Um, no.

In fact, uh, public opinion has suggested that the Canadians, uh, uh, at least a plurality of Canadians were against, uh, more concessions to the US.

How on earth do you fight these fires, Steven?

Yeah, no.

There is not...

They, they, they use water, there's retardants, they try to create fire breaks, but, um, often it's a, it's a case of waiting for the weather to turn, and, um, that is what we're doing right now.

There's, there's enormous effort being put towards this.

Do we have a sense of how much traffic the Ambassador Bridge stands to lose?

What we have is a Department of Homeland Security study that the US government actually published in January that said that commercial traffic at the publicly owned bridge would drop from nearly three million vehicles annually to about 1.6 million once the Gordie Howe Bridge is open.

Among the four crossings in the region, according to this Homeland Security projection, the Gordie Howe Bridge would attract 28% of passenger vehicle traffic and nearly 45% of commercial vehicle traffic.

One of the things that truckers like about the new bridge, we had talked to, um, the president of the Canadian Trucking Alliance about this.

Stephen Laskowski, uh, said his members estimate the Gordie Howe Bridge's opening will save them between 20,000 to 100,000 a month through operational efficiencies, including shorter wait times.

That's because inspection facilities for traffic on the new bridge, you know, customs inspection, et cetera, they're more convenient, and the highway connections between Canada and the US are speedier.

So for the... as he said, for the first time in the Windsor-Detroit corridor, we're gonna have highway-to-highway connections from the 401 in Ontario to the I-75 in the US.

What are the details of this agreement?

Hmm.

And its workforce, which is about 4,200 people, according to a recent count, is double what it was more than 10 years ago.

It has become a priority for government funding.

They've sort of added responsibilities to their mandate over the years.

First, it was code breaking and code making, then it was protecting government computer systems, and then it was assisting other governments and agencies when needed.

But in 2019, they added two types of foreign cyber operations.

These are what are called defensive cyber operations and active cyber operations.

Is that right?

The envoy for China and Canada told The Globe and Mail, told me, uh, that our new strategic partnership, uh, that was signed by Mr. Carney back in January could be imperiled if Canada continues to send warships through the Taiwan Strait or continues to allow parliamentarians, MPs and senators, to visit Taiwan and, and meet with the government.And that was a clear attempt to sort of weaponize this, uh, new relationship.

Obviously, Mr. Carney and Canada is vulnerable right now.

We're looking for new friends.

We're looking for new export markets because of the US and because of the mercurial and protectionist Trump administration.

So, uh, China recognizes that we're in a weakened situation and, and is trying to press its advantage there.

We send, uh, warships through the Taiwan Strait at the rate of two, sometimes three a year.

Is there anything that we've learned so far from this trip with Trump and Xi that could impact Canada and the deals they struck with China?

Over the past number of weeks, Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Who was a, uh, Sikh Canadian activist, uh, who was murdered in the parking lot of a, of a Sikh temple.

Uh, this particular murder took place in June twenty twenty-three in Surrey, BC.

So when he in-- he made this accusation, it was only several months after the murder.

The Indian government immediately rejected the allegation, uh, and then proceeded to expel about forty-one Canadian diplomats, and in turn, uh, the Canadian government expelled a representative of India's intelligence agency who was working in the Indian High Commission in Canada.

Uh, this wasn't the end of it by any means.

We saw only sixteen months ago in twenty twenty-four, Mr. Trudeau again expelled six Indian diplomats, including the High Commissioner, who of course, is the, uh, India's top envoy in Canada, and accused them of being part of a campaign of violence against Canadian citizens.

How successful are these efforts he's making, and, and what's the potential cost here?
