Opticons.

Opticons were huge back then.

Um, you know, there were a lot of people who did their post-secondary education, reading books with a little handheld camera.

and an array of pins that they set their finger on top of, and as they ran across the text, it would render the shape of the letters on those pins, and they would feel their way through that textbook.

I found that absolutely remarkable that people could do that in the first place, because I could never, even when I was fixing them, I could never really make out the shapes of the letters well enough to read with them.
