Uh, I canvassed some of my colleagues, uh, younger colleagues in News Talk, uh, males, and they informed me that many of their friends, uh, their peer group, do smoke.

Yeah, I, I think it's a, it's a, it's a tricky one to explain.

I mean, I, I think from the outset it's like nobody really gets into smoking for rational reasons.

You know, if, if you have your first cigarette, I think it's something, you know, nobody enjoys it.

You've got to labor through it, and you kind of have to practice to, to, to, like, end up enjoying smoking.

And I think maybe what that signals is that there's something here going on that's about more than, um, about the kind of the, the rational or just the, the, the enjoyment of, of cigarettes, and I think that push- pushes us in the direction of, um, what a lot of the young people were talking about there in that clip, that cigarettes kind of carry a, a deep symbolism and that people are using that as a, as a form of self-expression.

And I think that's something in, in today's consumer culture, the idea that we don't consume for, for rational reasons, but we consume to express ourselves.

There was a thing, I don't know, five, six years ago now, where he was one of the special guests at a, I think it was Narra Court, so we're talking the middle of nowhere, South Australia.

racing day so narrow court cup or whatever it was and he was a special guest and I was there to host the fashions on the field so I was the no-name but we were both on the same plane going to this event and I hadn't met him before and of course we started talking because I couldn't resist and I wanted to thank him for the mark of the year and stuff.

And then he also brought up a decision that he had that he didn't agree with where he had a shot at goal from a metre out and claimed that it went over and came back and I said it hit the post.

You can just imagine.
