So if you could change people's perception about algae, what would you say?

Hmm.

I find myself having to sort of introduce it as slime and pond scum as well, 'cause that, that is what it is and...

But the reality is that I think it's about two billion years ago, very, very primitive microalgae basically invented photosynthesis and that led to, you know, oxygenation of, of the atmosphere and allowed life on Earth to happen.

And then a little bit later on down the track, microalgae teamed up with fungus and they created essentially the first terrestrial, like, land plant.

So, you know, all land plants, shrubs, trees, grasses, everything you see is a descendant of that symbiotic relationship with an algae and a fungus.

And that network of fungus between tree roots today is, is remnant from that initial relationship and yeah, to me that's just mind-blowing.

Are you aware of anything similar happening in Australia that's wider than New South Wales? Or is it fairly niche, and there's not many of you? [laughs]
