When you look at the postmortems on major IT projects that have been publicly reported on, whether they went badly or well, the insights and recommendations are very much aligned.

Absolutely.

And there are some pretty high-profile examples to draw on here, where public sector... tech transformation projects in New Zealand have resulted in major headaches.

The one point I do want to make though is that we are picking on public sector projects here only because publicly available reports and court judgements have been released on these.

The private sector is by no means immune to making the same sorts of mistakes.

So the reports and cases that we will draw on today include those that relate to the famous NovaPay education payroll system project run by the Ministry of Education.

More recently, the rostering system for prisons project run by the Department of Corrections.
