Chronic Stress, Hormones & Healing from the Inside Out
S
11:18Sonya JensenGUEST
I feel like this is probably the key to, to healing, when we can understand our own story, and that story can be reflected through how we were modeled how to be as women.
S
11:29Sonya JensenGUEST
So were we modeled people-pleasing, overworking, overachieving, performing, um, or, you know, were there things, patterns passed down through the generations, through family, through culture, or even society that start to frame how we're operating in our world, and especially our beliefs about ourselves? So the stories we carry are really the beliefs about how we're supposed to be in order to receive love, in order to belong, in order to navigate this world.
S
11:56Sonya JensenGUEST
And so that story, I feel like it's carried in our cells in term- in- with our hormones.
S
12:02Sonya JensenGUEST
So as we're growing, even in the womb, like studies are now showing how much of an impact our mom's stress levels will have on our own resilience as we're navigating life.
S
12:13Sonya JensenGUEST
And so when we start to see that correlation and as we're growing, and, you know, age three to five and five to seven, DHEA is starting to rise, and it's often in opposition of cortisol.

Can you talk a little bit about your HER Method and what you're doing with women that's really working?
113. The Hormones and Emotions Connection - Why Healing Your Hormones Means Healing Your Story with Dr. Sonya Jensen

My question is, for all these women who are listening and feeling exhausted and feeling anxious and disconnected from their bodies and may be stuck in a pattern that they've identified with, what are our hormones trying to tell us during the, that time?
S
9:51Sonya JensenGUEST
When we're feeling disjointed and disconnected and the hormones are amplifying all these emotions that we maybe have suppressed over the years, and the stories that we've been carrying, they're amplifying our ability to actually hear the story, to understand the story so that we can actually transform it so that we're now in the driver's seat.
S
10:13Sonya JensenGUEST
I think for generations and for years, we have certain beliefs that are dictating our habits.
S
10:19Sonya JensenGUEST
They're dictating what we believe ourselves to be, our perception of the world.
S
10:24Sonya JensenGUEST
And then when we have these hormonal changes, whether you're in puberty and hormones are building, our whole outlook on life is changing.

Episode #93 Featuring Dr. Sonya Jensen! The HORMONE Episode! Tune in for one of the most in depth hormone discussions you will ever hear!

Well, I think we see everything in life through the lens of our emotions, whether it's a movie that we're watching, and it's the emotion that's, you know, giving us this feeling of joy or sorrow, whatever it might be, a conversation we're having or a trigger that we don't even know where it's coming from.
S
4:30Sonya JensenGUEST
It could be a look that our partner gives us, and all of a sudden we're having these emotions show up, and then we're reacting to that emotion.
S
4:38Sonya JensenGUEST
And when we're having these different phases of life go on, so whether that's puberty, when our hormones are changing, or postpartum, when a woman gives birth, or perimenopause, when her hormones are kind of going wild and she's losing hormones or gaining, it changes how she's perceiving life and herself, so it changes her emotional regulation.
S
5:01Sonya JensenGUEST
And if she can understand that, she doesn't have the same shame and guilt that might show up if she doesn't understand it.

Can I actually ask the questions that I already know need to be asked, or do I need to just help her with her fatigue? Look at her adrenals, do some testing to help her understand.

... or that story of not feeling safe in that moment with that look from your husband.
S
9:43Sonia JensenGUEST
And what I have found in perimenopause is because there's so much vulnerability there, that it's just so hard to ignore those pieces now.
S
9:52Sonia JensenGUEST
So those feelings that we suppressed before are going to show up in different ways.
S
9:56Sonia JensenGUEST
Maybe it's going to amplify the anxiety you feel about your future, or it's gonna amplify the rage that you've been holding onto when your voice was not heard.
S
10:05Sonia JensenGUEST
Or you're going to feel even sadder than you were before because of the grief that you didn't get to process through all those years.
S
10:11Sonia JensenGUEST
So I think because we don't have that armor anymore from the hormones, we're just more vulnerable, just like we are in pregnancy and post-pregnancy, that this is a time or opportunity to actually heal those old wounds.
