Siddhanth Jayaram on Equilibrium's high-integrity carbon credits playbook
H

Can you talk a bit about your own journey as well to get us started? A brief history of how you came to start Equilibrium.

Yeah, no, I mean, in 2015, almost a decade ago, I finished my undergraduate studies, was very sort of inspired by the Indian dream.
S

I think that was the year where Ola, Flipkart, Snapdeal, all of these companies had billion-dollar valuations and they were about just six to seven-year-old companies at that point of time, right? And realized that, you know, India...

India's time has come for tech-first companies, right? So ended up coming back to India, worked in venture capital at Kalari Capital for five years.

And during COVID, when all of us had more time, I think for me, personally, I felt that, you know, I wanted to do something more than just... do technology investing.

And along the way, you can pick examples, specific examples of what kind of projects and different areas, technologies, solutions, business models, whatever you think is worthwhile highlighting to give us a sense of what equilibrium does.

The way I look at the pricing of the credits is, you know, a pyramid, right? At the top of the pyramid, you have your engineered carbon removal solutions.
S

And again, it's based on certain industry parameters like permanence, additionality, you know, novelty to an extent as well, right? And it is very homogeneous.
S

So at the top of the pyramid are like your solutions that directly capture air from the atmosphere.

You have bioengineered carbon storage where, you know, in the Western world, you're, you're, taking biomass and storing it in the ground for uh centuries right uh so these engineered solutions get priced at somewhere north of 500 odd dollars right uh per credit right uh i almost call them as the luxury uh gucci balenciaga equivalent of of the carbon credit market right um There's now a new set of solutions like enhanced rock weathering and biochar that get priced somewhere between $100 to $200 odd.
