How is it that access to clean, abundant energy promotes peace in a region?

It's a great question.

So in the research we've done, we've seen quite a bit of anecdotal evidence that that shows that there is a link or an association between reliance on fossil fuel forms of energy and conflict and insecurity.

So for example, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where we have a number of partners, we see that groups that control resources like charcoal are conflict actors.

Their activities are financed from the trade of these illicit sources of fuel.

In South Sudan, we have seen that conflict actors tax the diesel supply chain.

And so there are a number of instances where control and trade of illicit sources of fuel, often fossil fuels, is a contributing factor to the conflict.
