What are your thoughts on autism classes?
5:58
Well, it...
5:58
You have to look at it historically, and I have to preface this with, like, sometimes it's very hard to know- What an autism class is just by looking at it.
6:08
Okay, and, and what I mean when I say that is that there are people who will stay as far away from possible as an autism class, and there's people who will fight to the death for an autism class because two things are happening at the same time, okay? So if you look at historically where autism classes came from, or any segregated class, and when I say that word, I say it intentionally 'cause it means there's no other option, and the decision to go there was made by someone without autism, right? Like, welcome to any special program, right? If there's no choice, and the decision is made by someone outside of the community that it's being designed for, that's a segregated community.
6:48
It is, right? There's no other option.
6:50
That historically has come from generations of ableism and, like, i- i- and the history's awful, right? Like, kids with intellectual disabilities and developmental, including autism, right, they were put there because of assumptions that they can't or shouldn't access education, and that has come from many reasons, some well-meaning, right? They need to be protected.
7:17
They're not able.
