Can either of you touch on the cultural or indigenous significance of the reef or this area of Queensland in general?

Here in the Whitsundays, our native tribe is the Ngaru tribe.

They were the island people or the canoe people, they were also known as here.

But along the Great Barrier Reef, I think there are 70 traditional owner groups that actually call the Great Barrier Reef home.

So I can't talk too much about their areas 'cause I haven't been up to those areas much myself.

But here in the Whitsundays, there is some very cool cultural significant areas around here, and I think they've got history dated to about 9,000 years ago here.And there are some areas where we have, we can do tours to actual cave paintings as well, and they have been dated to two-and-a-half thousand years ago.

But, um, yeah, and they've actually discovered shell middens, so basically a big pile of shells and bones that have dug down and then carbon dated everything then so they can kind of know roughly how far ago they were used to.

So like the living piece of the organism has died or left, and it just leaves the calcium, the hard piece left.
