So, Scott, what are some of the most important ways insurance has contributed to America's economic development and growth over the past 250 years?
3:12
That's a great question.
3:14
The contributions really began with the country's founding when marine insurers underwrote the United States by shouldering the burdens, the financial risk associated with the American fight for independence.
3:28
And during the American Revolution, maritime insurers really helped the new nation negotiate foreign loans, sell state debt, establish early banking.
3:39
And since David Letterman is no longer on late night, if it's all right, I thought I'd give a quick top 10 list on the ways that insurers and the insurance industry helps our society and economy.
3:52
Go right ahead, Scott.
3:54
So number 10, by providing loss control services and imposing underwriting requirements, insurers assist policyholders in identifying and managing risk and vulnerabilities before they result in losses.

Scott, do you think emerging risks, things like PFAS, climate change, cyber threats, and AI are reshaping insurance coverage and litigation?

Can you tell me a little bit about how that's opening the door for litigation?
1:59
Sure, Annie.
2:00
First of all, thank you for having me on and for making me 250 years old, because that would justify looking the way that I do.
2:07
Yes, you cannot turn on any podcast these days or the TV or radio or, or read the newspaper without seeing something about AI, and we are in the midst of the AI revolution.
2:19
And i- insurers have to look at it from a few aspects.
2:23
They're still businesses, and so as businesses, they are adopting AI and using it in a bunch of their business activities, everything from claims handling a- and evaluation, as you mentioned, to fraud detection, to pricing policies across the board.
2:40
And then insurers also are having to contend with AI when they're confronted with claims by their policyholders.

But would you say all of the major players in the insurance industry are using AI at this point in their claims handling process?
