I have spent the better part of an almost 30-year career focused on data and marketing.

And my job, along with a couple of others, was to figure out how to monetize the attention that people spend on television.

And we started modestly with a focus on If we helped, say, HBO or Netflix sell a subscription, could we get a bounty or a reward for helping them move their business forward? Very quickly, we realized that that home screen on your Roku device, the first thing you see when you turn your television on, was pretty powerful real estate and something that could influence what people choose to watch.

Lots of data science and marketing technology went into the subsequent work to try and figure out how to Not just influence you to subscribe to HBO, but also how to smartly place ads with our partners that would invite more attention, more action from consumers.

How do you go about that?

Yeah, I spent almost 25 years in the media and tech space as an engineer for the first part of my career.

I joined Roku at a very early stage when we were just selling hardware.

We were selling little sticks and pucks that you would plug into your television.

We had to even launch the televisions that have Roku built in at that time.

And my job was to turn that growing platform into a way of making money off of consumer behavior.

So we started a take a fee on subscriptions and run ads.

Has that been your experience? Are you working with some of the smaller vertically integrated companies that want to scale but haven't had the resource like this to be able to do it? Are you working with some of the larger big box companies or is it just kind of everybody?
