But before we go more into specifically more of the work you're doing and maybe some tools and tactics, and I want to run some phrases by you that are popular in the suicide world that maybe you like or dislike, but I want to know more about your specific suicide attempt, like what led to it, what happened afterwards, and things of that nature, if you feel comfortable sharing that.
16:51
Yeah, I'm happy to.
16:52
I was 23.
16:54
My life had really hit rock bottom.
16:56
I didn't understand student loans and then the market crashed in 2008.
17:00
So I ended up with $90,000 of student loan debt to be a teacher making $27,000 a year.
17:07
And it was my fault.

What, what does that mean? Like what, where do people start with that? Um, is that just like doing everything that comes to their brain? Is that like going on a bunch of vacations or what's the, what's the fucking secret sauce there, Sam? Yeah.
16:10
Our next guest is Sam Eaton, a former music teacher who once planned his own death on Christmas Day and instead chose to stay and to spend the years since helping others find a way through their darkest moments.
16:23
My name is Sam Eaton.
16:25
I'm an author, speaker, and founder of Recklessly Alive.
16:28
And the work I do is really focused on helping people who've lost hope and who feel like maybe life isn't worth living.
16:35
I've had some deep struggles with depression and suicidal ideation.
16:39
And out of those struggles, there's just always been something in me that wants to help, that wants to love people, that wants to reach back into the hardest parts of my story and help somebody who is where I was.
16:56
I grew up with an alcoholic father who, as a result of that disease, just caused a lot of pain in my life.
3:23
So what changed for you that inspired you to write this book, You Can Do This?
3:29
You know, some days I still don't want to talk about the darkest and hardest seasons of my life.
3:34
I keep asking God for like a surfing ministry would be great, something maybe skateboarding, a little less intense.
3:42
But I have seen these things work in my own life.
3:46
And so as I travel and speak, a lot of people, they feel inspired, but they don't know what to do.
3:51
They don't know what steps to take in their everyday life.
3:54
So I wrote You Can Do This.
5:26
Self-talk happens the second
8:45
Why would that be the day that you know that you're kind of start to make that plan?
8:49
So one of the biggest misconceptions about suicidal thoughts and suicide in general is that it's selfish.
8:55
It's so selfish.
8:56
It's the most selfish thing you could ever do.
8:58
And I understand why people feel that way.
9:01
It's often said by people who have lost someone and absolutely it passes the pain on.
9:06
But if...
