The Origin of American Authoritarianism | Episode 6

3:41Ryan EcklenGUEST
As we were getting on the freeway to go to the federal building, um, a bald eagle flew over the overpass, and the ICE agent in this passenger van said to the driver, "Hey, look, see that? It's a bald eagle." And he said, "Do you know what that means?" And the driver responded and said, "God is on our side." And what that said to me was that not only do they feel allowed to act with impunity and do what they're doing, but they almost feel as though it's some sort of righteous calling, and that really made me more scared than anything else.

As I walked in, a number of tables were set up along the left-hand side of the wall, and on a piece of cardboard, uh, was written with, like, black marker, like the way that you would make a garage sale sign.

It said, "USC 111." And what I realize now is that 18 USC 111 is the code that a lot of ICE agents will use when they feel as though they have somebody who is impeding an investigation.
