The Power of the Right Room: Ruth Baugh’s Leadership Journey
R
19:00RuthGUEST
Um, I feel like one of my favorite parts has been having you and Beth Darwin, other teachers like you and your voices in, in the mix, um, I think has been eye-opening for owners and directors as well, um, just to really have real perspectives.
R

What made you say yes to joining the Trailblazer Leadership Group? Um, I think for me it was, I remember like something was like pitch the idea of how you're feeling to Erica, right? Because like at that time I was, I, I knew, like I knew I had a talent and I knew I had a gift and I knew I had a passion, right? Because, um, I just, I was like, I, I do love this.

Um, let's talk a little bit about your history with chronic illness so people know where you're coming from.
R
1:36RuthGUEST
Yeah, um, I, my intention today is not to get into all the details 'cause as you said, it, it varies so much from person to person.
R
1:47RuthGUEST
Um, I can say chronic illness has been, has defined the majority of my life, uh, starting with issues when I was a child and ongoing, and there have been some ups and downs throughout that time.
R
2:00RuthGUEST
But definitely my whole life has been marked by, uh, the challenges that come with chronic illness.
R
2:10RuthGUEST
Um, and I was thinking about what I wanted to share and found myself wishing most of all what I could do would be to hear from others who are struggling with this and to hear their story because, um, they don't need me to, to say how hard life can be because they're living it.

Tegan TaylorHOST
Can you tell me about the moment where you realized that you needed to formulate an escape plan and leave your relationship?
R
5:12RuthGUEST
About nine years into our marriage, uh, there was a series of four days where my husband was getting increasingly more aggressive, angry, irritable with me, and at the end of those four days, he picked up a knife off of our kitchen counter that I'd just cleaned, and he pointed it at me.
R
5:31RuthGUEST
And in that moment, I knew I had to leave, because he had been violent with me before.
R
5:39RuthGUEST
He'd even been physically violent with me before, but he'd never picked up a weapon, and in that moment that he did, I realized that he was capable of really hurting me in a way that I never knew, and I knew I had to get out.

Tegan TaylorHOST
Do you wanna speak to sort of some of those biases that, that come through when you're having conversations with people?
R
7:55RuthGUEST
There's so many biases, and we all have this kind of stereotype of what an abusive relationship really looks like, and the image that I see a lot is sort of a, a, a pretty white woman kind of balled up in a corner as someone advances on them with violence, and it's really not like that.

And so when it comes to zippers, there isn't actually any official stated doctrine in the Amish community.
